Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Yews contributions are invited: payment will be made on publication.

Atlas cast-steel wheels have been specified for the Rykuield omnibuses which are to be used in Brussels.

The inhabitants of Eckington, near Sheffield, deplore the fact that there is no local motorbus service. Connections. by road, to neighbouring railway stations are grossly deficient. Splashguards.

Stoke Newington Borough Council has adopted a resolution, on is communication from the Poplar Borough Council. in terms which record the opinion that effective mudguards, of a different type to those now in use, should be fitted tn nintny orniiihn,;es.

We comment, at some length (page 253), on the claims of an up-to-date splashguard device, and we take the opportunity to revert to the subject of the dispersal of mud.

City of London Traffic.

Under the Act of Parliament, passed this Session, the Court of Aldermen of the City of London has power to make regulations for dealing with motor omnibuses and omnibus traffic generally, within the City. The Court of Aldermen had the matter nyder consideration at a meeting on Friday ; this, as usual, was held in private. Regulations are to be drafted, and, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, a public inquiry will be held in the Guildhall, in about six weeks, to receive suggestions and objections. The procedure will then be that, if amendments are pressed, they will be again considered by the Court of Aldermen, and, before coming into force, the regulations will have, to be confirmed by the Home Secretary.

Motor Omnibus Powers to be Sought Next Session.

We have obtained such particulars as are available in regard to the essential points in some of the Bills which will come before Parliament next Session. The following are seeking powers to run motor omnibuses : 'Warrington Corporation, Leeds Corporation, Stratford-on-Avon and Midland Junction Railway Co., and Bradford (Yorks) Corporation. Warrington Corporation asks for powers to provide and run motor omnibuses, either within or without thi borough, and to acquire and provide buildings, plant, etc., and to make by-laws.

Leeds Corporation asks for powers to provide and work omnibuses moved by electrical power supplied by means of overhead conductors, along a route in the parishes of Leeds, Armley and Bromley in the City, commencing in the City Square and terminating at the boundary of the City at Drighlington. It is asked that the omnibuses be excluded from the operation of the Tlighways and Locomotives (Amendment) Act, 1878, the Locomotives on Highways Act, 1896. the Motor Car Act, 1903, or any of the orders made thereunder respectively, and from any other Acts or Orders relating to locomotives, motorcars, or omnibuses.

The Stratford-on-Avon and Midland Junction Railway Co. asks that the company he authorized to provide, work, and use, in connection with, or in extension of, its railway system, or otherwise, in any district to which its railways afford access, omnibuses, and other road vehicles to be drawn or moved by animal power, electricity, or any other mechanical power.

Bradford Corporation asks for powers to provide, acquire, and run omnibuses, or motorcars, to be worked or operated from overhead trolley wires charged with electricity, on the system known as the "trackless trolley system," or by other mechanical means.

We have already mentioned (issue of the 18th inst.) that Rotherham Town Council will seek powers.

In regard to the application for powers to run on the trackless-trolley system, we would point out that, in the present Session of Parliament, the clauses of four applications lodged in this respect (by Gateshead, Liverpool, Manchester and Oldham) were struck out. The promoters of the ayetam have, however, as reported in this journal, taken steps which they hope will enable them to rebut the objection that no sufficient demonstration has been given in this country.

"Spoiling" the Sandwichboard man.

We have observed, on several occasions recently, that sandwichboardmen are being afforded a measure of luxurious conveyance, in keeping with the times. The incongruity of the combination lends, no doubt, to its advertisement value, and we are able to illustrate the latest example-provided by the Continental Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., whose English offices are in the Clerkenwell Road, E.C. It may be mentioned, incidentally, that the balloons shown are made of material similar to that used in the construction of nearly all the principal Continental dirigible airships. To what new uses will motorbuses yet be put ?

Speed Indicators.

It is a significant fact that a special committee of the Tramways and Light Railways Association is considering

the drawing-up of conditions for the trial of speed-indicating instruments. The members of the special committee are: Ntr. H. England (general manager, Wakefield).; Mr. C. W. Mallins (general manager, Liverpool); Mr. A. IT. Pott (chief engineer, Metropolitan Electric Tramways); Sir Clifton Robinson (managing director, London United Tramways); Mr. J. R. Salter (general manager, Lancashire United Tramways); and Mr. S. Sallon (representing several tramway undertakings). The L.C.C. appears to be holding itself aloof.

Maidstone-Sevenoaks.

Further to our announcement of last week, a local correspondent informs us that a 32 h.p. " Comroer Car" single-deck omnibus has been put into service, between Maidstone and Sevenoaks, by Commercial Car Hirers, Ltd. It passes through Melling, Wrotham, Borough Green, Ightham, Crown Point, and Seal. Three double journeys a day are run, at present, the last trip from Maidstone being timed to convey theatregoers home. The return fare is 3s. for a distance of about 341 ml lea.

Heanor Tradesmen and Communication Facilities.

The Beanor Tradesmen's Association is anxious to obtain a local service of motorbuses; envious eyes are being turned in the direction of the facilities which are at present being enjoyed by Ripley and Alfreton, and it is hoped that Commercial Car Hirers, Ltd., will take the matter up. A service between Heanor and Nottingham, via Morley, Smalley, Heanor, Langley Mill, Eastwood and Kimberley, is said to be badly wanted. Mr. J. Reeby is the secretary to the body named.

Competition at fiord.

At the last meeting of the Ilford District Council, it was resolved to appoint a tramways manager at a commencing salary of £300 per annum, rising by annual increments of 125 to. £400. Councillor Church, in opposing the proposal, said that the idea of the majority was that, because they had to fight the motor omnibuses and their tramway receipts were going down, it was advisable to make this new appointment. He affirmed, however, they would not obtain a return for this new expenditure, and that they were going in the same direction as other departments of the Council, where the whole money went in salaries.
