Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Pressure from environmentalist groups has forced the Department of Transport to change its proposals for the 2160 million east London river crossing.

On the proposed section of road through Plurnstead, the Department of Transport now plans to build a 610m long tunnel, instead of the 305m long viaduct originally planned.

The change, which is expected to cost an additional £8.5 million; will still require the demolition of around 250 houses, but the Department claims visual intrusion and noise will be reduced.

A public enquiry into the proposed river crossing is currently underway and is expected to be completed in the autumn.
