At the wheel of a Mini 850 he took the test 30 years to the day after the first advanced test was conducted. He passed — well, he would, wouldn't he? The examiner commented: "The Minister was a bit nervous at first but soon settled down to some good positive driving. There were one or two minor faults, but Mr Bottomley observed all speed limits meticulously." I should think so too; they are his speed limits.
Bottomley is the third Transport Minister to join the JAM. Lynda Chalker passed her test while she was Minister and Norman Fowler was already an IAM member when he was appointed.
