Operators who have been worrying about the uncontrollable increases in the cost of running their vehicle can take at least a small measure of comfort from a couple of . announcements from.two service companies. Fleet Hire Ltd from Birmingham has said that it has decided to stabilize its charges for 90 days as a contribution to stumping the skimp and Brew Brothers I .td in London has decided not to increase its service charge despite recent wage increases to its staff. • Both companies have been motivated by a desire to control road freight vehicle operating costs though the cynical could be forgiven for suggesting t hat charges everywhere are alread■ far too high. Nevertheless. there is no doubt that unless a start is made somewhere many operators unable to recoup the money spent on providing a transport service by adequately increasing rates will be compelled to look elsewhere for a financially rewarding occupation. commercial show — and the 1977 car show will have to moue to another venue. Although the SMMT are known to be reluctant to go there, it seems almost certain that the new National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham will be the eventual choice.

Mind you, I am not too bothered about the 1976 show or the 1978 one, it's the 1974 one that gets me. I have just worked out that it's only seven weeks away. What a thought...
