Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE threatened halt in latenight hus services in Edinburgh (C.14 July 26) has been implemented. Assaults on bus crews in the city late on Friday and Saturday nights have resulted in the complete withdrawal of services after 9.30 on these nights.

Mr A. G. Weir, official of the men's branch of the TGWU, said: "The curfew had 100 per cent support. There was not a Corporation bus on the road after 9.30."

Mr Weir. who travelled around the bus garages, believed the restrictions had stopped assaults on bus staff. "I do not know of any assaults taking place before 9.30." Crews are losing money by stopping early but Mr Weir commented: "It would not be much of a protest if there were no sacrifices."

A spokesman for the

Corporation transport department, said: "The exercise went off smoothly. The curfew seemed to go off without any incident and we got all the buses .off the roads by 9.30." It was evident that a small number of people were unware of the ban but the vast majority knew of it.

The department was hoping to negotiate with the TGWU in an effort to prevent further restrictions.
