THIS WEEK'S amendment to the Road Traffic Bill means that tachographs are not yet compulsory in the UK. This merely means that they will not become a legal requirement in Britain until the EEC scheme comes into operation here. Between now and then operators will require to become conversant with all aspects of tachograph fitment, operation, use and legal requirements.

Will tachographcharts supersede written records when the EEC scheme takes effect in Britain? Can an operator fit and service his own tachographs? How much will tachographs cost to install? What must a driver do if his tachograph fails during a journey?
