THE Road Haulage Association's national council is this week discussing the nationalization threat posed to the industry should a Labour Government be returned with a working majority at the next General Election.
A spokesman for the Association told CM that the Association's executive board had already discussed the matter and made certain recommendations to the council. "Until the council has examined the recommendations, there is nothing more I can say," he added.
However, the RHA has no plans to discuss the nationalization threat at its conference in Plymouth which takes place from October 14-16. If, however, the General Election has not taken place by then, it seems likely that the open session at the end of the conference could develop into a nationalization debate.
Papers will include one on the "Profit and loss account" by E. M. Hains, development director of P and 0 Road Services Ltd; a technical paper on goods vehicle engine development by M. Vulliany of the Perkins Engine Co; and an operating paper from H. Bunnenbruck, DFD Germany, whose subject is back-loading facilities.
There are two career papers, one by R. F. E. Campbell, of the Independent Schools Careers Association, who will discuss careers in general, and there is to be an open discussion on careers for women at all levels in road transport. The business lunch speaker this year is Mr Peter Jay, Economics editor of The Times.
