Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Whether or not the Socialist party has a conference before the next General Election. it should nevertheless listen to the voices of Messrs Jenkins, Prentice and Mayhew before compiling its manifesto. Britain is not y et ready for extreme Left-wing policies, and particularly. not for more nationalization. The evils of a monopoly whether of a priv ate company or the State, are manifest: rate fixing, restriction of choice. uniformity of services and doing everything "by the book". As a result it destroys the right of both management and man to derive job satisfaction from the employment of their skills. This in its turn leads to apathy and a "take it or leave it attitude; on some occasions even to industrial unrest -and there is plenty of evidence in our recent past to support this opinion.

The RH A is taking the nationalization threat seriously, and is already planning what its approach will be before the threat materializes. But the question should also be exercising the minds of all independent road hauliers and passenger vehicle operators and their employees, as well as those who use their services.

Good relations between management, employees and customers are an essential element in any successful business, and the nationalizers would do well to look at the industrial relations track record of the road haulage industry and then compare it with that of the public utilities since 1946.

In any case aquisition by legislation is both costly and cumbersome. If the State wants a larger share of road transport let NF( 's highly competant management go out and purchase desirable companies who are willing to sell.

This way it will acquire good management, good men and good work in a way that compulsory take ON er can never achieve.
