Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• On Sunday Coventry Corporation Transport is to make two innovations which, it is claimed, will form one of the most important stages in the development of the undertaking. The first is the introduction of "Monobus" services--a switch to one-man operations of four double-deck bus services in the city. At the same time, a discount ticket scheme devised as an integral part of the o-m-o system, but available to passengers on all services, will be operated

It is four years since Coventry decided to convert to o-m-o but at that time this was restricted to single-deckers. Following the introduction by the MoT on July 11966, of regulations permitting the operation of om-o double-deckers, Coventry Rave a lead by ordering 18 Daimler Fleetline buses with Eastern Coach Works bodies designed expressly for o-m-o. These were delivered earlier this year (CM March 8).

A system of selling tickets in advance at a special discount was devised by the transport department. Self-cancelling ticket ma

chines were fitted to the o-m-o double-deckers, together with power-operated ticket machines for the drivers, change-giving machines and a device for telling the driver how many seats are available in the upper saloon.

The aim of the system is to give the passenger a discount of about 10 per cent if he buys books of tickets in advance. Precise discounts range from 8.57 per cent to 11.11 per cent because of the fixed amount of 8s per book of tickets, irrespective of the denomination.

Vending machines have been erected at two points in the city centre and in four of Coventry's leading department stores. The passenger obtains the book of tickets by inserting four 2s pieces or the new equivalent—the 10 new pence coin. The tickets are cancelled on the buses as required.

Passengers buying tickets from the driver will continue to pay the normal fare.
