A COMPACT item of equipment rx which, in a simple manner, is designed to ensure that a petrol engine receives full lubrication under pressure the instant its ignition is switched on has been developed by Stack Engineering and Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Cheney Manor, Swindon, Wilts. The unit is basically a hydraulic accumulator in which 16 fi. oz. (0-8 pt.) of oil at a pressure of 40 p.s.i. are stored while the engine is running. When the engine is switched on prior to being started, this oil is automatically released from the unit and fed into the oil ways. This is controlled by an electrically-operated solenoid which opens a valve.

• The pre-start oil-pressure unit is approximately S in. high, with a diameter of 4 in., and its retail price, complete with neCesSary fittings and installation instructions, is £8 9s., plus 3s. 6d. for postage and packing. It is .currently being produced in a form suitable for fitting to the majority of modern cars (and hence light commercial vehicles also, as many of these have car-type engines) and the manufacturers state that installation occupies only 20 minutes or so and can be carried out by the average motorist.

This Stack unit would be a particularly advantageous accessory for delivery vans which are entailed in numerous stops and restarts during the course of each working day, as the instantaneous supply of lubricating oil throughout the engine before the starter motor is operated cannot help but increase the life of an engine's hearings and other wearing surfaces.
