Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A LL-ROUND fare increases applied ("1 for by the Scottish Omnibus group have been approved by the Traffic Commissioners. The increases, to come into effect next Monday, are designed to absorb recent increases in wages, national insurance and fuel costs.

Mr. James Amos, chairman of the group, said at the time of the application that earnings for 1962 were £2,411,730 and if the present fares continued the figures would drop to £1,819,000 in 1963 and to £1.597,000 in 1964. This would represent a decrease of £800,000 in what Mr. Amos considered to be a reasonable income for a company with a capital investment of £30 m.

The Commissioners approved the main increases in the group's proposed new scale with the exception of the 3d. single, which will rise by only id. and not the id. asked for.

Companies who made application were: Scottish Omnibuses Ltd., Edinburgh; Western S.M.T. Co. Ltd., Kilmarnock; Central S.M.T. Co. Ltd., Motherwell; W. Alexander and Sons (Midland) Ltd., Falkirk; W. Alexander and Sons (Northern) Ltd., Aberdeen, and W. Alexander and Sons (Fife) Ltd., Kirkcaldy.

The Commissioners also approved several applications for increased bus fares by companies operating in the south and west of Scotland.
