FiGURES relating to -national investment in roads and road transport, as compared with electricity, mining and the railways, were given last week in the House of Commons.

On behalf of the Government, it was stated that the total gross fixed investment for last year was £3,139m. Of this sum, roads and public lighting took £29m. (0.9 per cent.) and road vehicles £285m. (9.1 per cent.). Expenditure on public service vehicles totalled £19m. (0.6 per cent.), goods vehicles £144m. (4.6 per cent.) and on cars (business expenditure only) £122m. (3.9 per cent.).

Railway investment totalled £92m. (2.9 per cent.); electricity £247m. (7.9 -per cent.), and coal mining £84m. (2.7 per cent.)-.
