THE DEPARTMENT for Transport (DfT) is urging operators to ensure their routes are "lawful and appropriate" in the wake of the Liberal Democrats calling for action on inappropriate routeing by sat-nays.

Last week Lib Dem shadow transport secretary Norman Baker pressed the government to take action to ensure sat-nays take into account the width, height and length of vehicles before identifying a route.

A spokeswoman for the DfT says that with sat-nay systems primarily designed for use in cars, they may be unsuitable for large or heavy vehicles.

She adds: "We are currently authorising a new road sign that they will be able to use to advise drivers of large vehicles to avoid unsuitable routes. We are also assisting a working group that brings together the sat-nav industry and local authorities."
