• No action was taken against the licence of Buxtonbased Turner Brothers when the firm appeared at a Manchester disciplinary inquiry before North Western LA Martin Albu, Turner holds an international licence for six vehicles and eight trailers, Department of Transport vehicle examiner Gordon Hulley said that he had inspected two vehicles and three trailers, issuing an immediate prohibition and two defect notices to the trailers.
John Turner, a partner, said they had been forced to make their drivers redundant and he and his partners, brothers Peter and Robert were now driving.
Maintenance problems had arisen as vehicles were not being inspected as planned. They now employed a freelance fitter who inspected one vehicle and two trailers each weekend.
Albu said that he was concerned about the ratio of liabilities to current assets although the firm was trading profitably.
Turner said they were trading on a very tight budget. Profit margins were very near the bone, but they owned the premises and this did not appear on the accounts.
Albu directed that a further maintenance investigation be carried out within 12 months. He also requested that the next set of accounts be sent to him.
