AN IMMEDIATE STUDY of transport services in Scotland has been ordered by the Scottish Shadow Secretary, Mr Alick Buchanan-Smith.

He has asked Mr George Younger, MP for Ayr, to undertake consultations and to report hack as soon as possible.

Mr Buchanan-Smith said there was "growing speculation" about transport services in Scotland. A statement was expected shortly about the future of the railways, bus fares were " exploding." and there was anxiety about services in rural areas.

The financial difficulties of the Government cast a shadow over the future road-building programme, he said, and there were "ominous rumours" that the Chancellor of the Exchequer was considering higher road taxes for his Budget.

Mr Buchanan-Smith added: "A good transport system is vital in Scotland. Not only do transport costs bear more on the cost of living and on costs for industry than in many other areas of Britain, but because of the geography of our country, good transport services are essential to many people in their everyday lives."
