TOO much road spending had been on inter-city links, hinted the Minister of Transport on Monday; he was changing this, and the 38 per cent share spent on roads in conurbations in 1964/65 would be raised to 47 per cent, he said.
He announced that, with the Greater London Council becoming the traffic authority for the whole of London on April 1, a new traffic advisory unit was being formed at the Ministry to advise other local authorities on traffic management and engineering. Mr. Fraser also announced that Sir Alex Samuels would have advisory duties, in a capacity yet to be announced.
The Ministry is considering the feasibility and practical politics of road pricing, permissive use or other controls, but on Monday the Minister stressed that it would be for local government to implement any schemes ultimately agreed.
