THE case for and against the charg
ing of higher fares on Christmas Day and the principle of extending the practice to all holidays came before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority at Bridlington, last week.
Applications to charge double fares on Christmas Day on bus services operated jointly by Hull Transport Department and East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., were heard. Hull Corporation applied in respect of 31 services and East Yorkshire in connection with 20 services.
Objections came from Haltemprice Urban District Council concerning the service to Anlaby Common and the E.Y.M.S. service from Hull to Beverley, and from Beverley Corporation regarding the Hull-Beverley route.
For Hull Corporation, Mr. K. Campbell said that permission to charge double fares on five routes had already been granted. Christmas Day services were used mainly by people attending football matches and other recreational pursuits. Workpeoplc who had to travel on Christmas Day would be receiving additional pay.
If the applications regarding Anlaby Common and Beverley were not granted, people using these services would be doing so at the expense of the Hull ratepayers.
