Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The sunglasses have barely been put back in the drawer and Manheim Auctions is already talking turkey. Yes, the Christmas rush is on...

When it comes to buying and selling after the summer season the trade doesn't hang about. The suntan might just be fading and the Hawaiian shirts only just dumped back in the wardrobe, but turnover is rising as dealers stock up for the Christmas rush.

Al Manheim Auctions' Colchester site two recent sales notched up conversion rates of 62 and 66"k respectively as the trade looks to buy and sell stock before the winter months slow down business. And dealers haven't been fussy about market sectors—they've been snapping up anything and everything.

"Trade is getting stock clever. It doesn't want to be carrying stock late in the year," says HGV and plant manager Jeremy Martell. "It wants to buy now and clear the decks so the money is in the banks to buy in the new year."

And that could be a wise move, because Martell believes the recent fuel hikes could have a sharp sting in its tail for hauliers."I think there will be a lot of repossessions in the new year. Hauliers will get their bills in the next month or so and some will struggle to pay. Repossession companies soon pick this up."

At auctions the trade seems to have picked up where exports left off.The dwindling numbers orpre-electronic" vehicles means exporters are starting to look in other places. Some fresh-faced exporters have arrived to try to pick up the slack, but the boom in shipping stock overseas may well be over.

Understandable "The type of product they are after — si x-yearold 3603-Series Scanias with little electronics — is reducing in numbers," Martell warns. And this shortage is understandable considering the volume that has been shipped abroad over the past two years Growth at Manheim Auctions has been consistent across the country, with Gloucester opening up its HGV auctions At Colchester trade was strong across the board, but trailers did particularly well, rising from five or 10 per sale to nearer 30 trailers up for grabs.

At the most recent sale three repossessed 2004 triaxle skeletals went under the hammer for £9,000 (ex-VAT) apiece..
