STRIKE ACTION by 29 BRS drivers has been averted after the company agreed to double its initial pay offer to 4%.

But MID James Walker says the drivers next pay increase is not now due until January 2007 — a year later than was specified in the firm's original offer.

"It has all been negotiated in an amicable way," Walker reports. "The last thing we wanted was to jeopardise jobs by anything we did or the drivers did."

The drivers, who are based at Chessington, Greater London, handle deliveries on a contract with office furniture company Spicers. They had voted to begin the first of four one-day strikes yesterday (Wednesday).

Bill Lamb, regional organiser of the Transport & General Workers Union, explains that BRS took over the contract within the last year. "Previously, it was with Lex Transfleet and we've always been able to secure an amicable result with them," he says.

A pay deal for 12 drivers at the BRS depot in Greenwich has yet to be finalised.
