TAKING EUROPE BY STORM • The Metropole Hotel, near the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, is to host a distribution conference focussing on the post-1992 European market.

Sponsored by the Institute of Freight Forwarders, the event will explore the opportunities 1992 offers; analyse case studies of major UK companies already active on the Continent; examine the application of telecommunications and EDI to freight distribution; and discuss the likely impact of the Channel tunnel.

INTERNATIONAL

EASING THE WAY IN AUSTRIA AND ITALY • The Austrian and Italian customs authorities have decided that, as from 1 October, freight vehicles reaching the border of Thorl-Maglern/ Coccau may use the motorway as follows: On leaving Austria to enter Italy, customs-cleared and empty lorries are entitled to use the motorway, while other vehicles must, as in the past, use the national road.

In the opposite direction, all freight vehicles can now use the motorway.
