May I say Commercial Motor made a very enjoyable day for me on September 3 at Cranfield Aerodrome. I'm not connected with road haulage, but collect model lorries as a hobby and always admire the skill with which the drivers handle these vehicles. Pity it's not more generally publicised, perhaps it would then break the barrier down which the general public have built against lorries.
When I came to look at the vehicle stands well, I was very disappointed. OAF and Volvo had numerous promotional items for sale, but not the British stands, except for one. That was a mobile parts vehicle which belonged to Sellers and Batty, ERF dealer for the area.
The chap on this stand looked very much in keeping with the area, handlebar moustache and blue uniform, ex-RAF I thought.
But the point is this he was all for selling ERF trucks, but it seems that ERF themselves didn't want to be bothered, except for his boss and one truck sales chappie.
He had a marvellous display of spares along with badges, matches, beer-mats and photos of old and new ERF. I asked if he had any T-shirts. His reply was, "I've been waiting six months and we still haven't got any."
Come one, British manufacturers, let's see a few more of the extras along with better supplies of parts.
