THE Volkswagen LT range is to be extended for 1979. Makin, UK debut at the Birmingham Commercial Motor Show wil the LT 45 taking VW further up the weight range with a g] weight of 4.5 tonnes giving a payload of 2.9 tonnes (2 ton cwt). It will be available as a high-roof panel van, a chassis. or a crew-cab which VW refers to as a "double cab."
The main changes made to the LT to cope with the increa weight are a new beam axle with semi-elliptic springs in plac the independent coil springs used on the smaller models and fitment of a five-speed gearbox as standard equipment.
Although a new 2.4-litre (146cuin) six-cylinder diesel enj — Volkswagen's first-ever six — is available in Europe, it not be produced at present for rhd models. For the UK, engine stays as the 2.0-litre (122cuin) petrol unit developed f the Audi 100.
