CHESHIRE County Council wants to ban tankers from the Runcorn-Widnes high-level bridge, as well as from the Mersey Tunnel.
A deputation set up by Cheshire's strategic planning committee decided to urge the Department of Transport to speed up an extension to the M57 so that tankers — mainly carrying liquefied petroleum — can avoid Widnes.
Councillor Ken Maynard said that at present 2,000 dangerous loads a day were driving through the town's residential roads.
"The threat of catastrophe is getting nearer daily. To use the existing motorway system would only add 18 miles to the tankers' journeys," he said.
