Daimler Transport Vehicles Ltd..
Daimler Works, Coventry.
DAIMLER produces only passenger vehicles and although front-engined designs are still made, the main part of the company's production is of the Roadliner single-decker and Fleetline double-decker both of which have rear engines.
In the forward-engine range there are singleand double-deck models. There is one single-deck design with a wheelbase of 22ft for 35ft long bodywork. But double-deck chassis have wheelbases of 16ft 3in, 16ft 4in or 18ft 6in. Body lengths catered for are 27ft 6in, 30ft and 33ft. Gardner 6LX and 6LW engines are used in both ranges of chassis and semi-automatic transmission, preselector epicyclic and constant-mesh gearboxes appear in the specifications.
There are bus and coach versions of the Roadliner, Both have an 18ft Bin wheelbase for 36ft long bodywork. The model can also be produced to accommodate bodies from 33ft to 40ft. A Cummins V6 engine is standard in the Roadliner, the difference between bus and coach versions being that output is 135 b.h.p. and 192 b.h.p. respectively.
The Cummins engine is at the extreme rear where it can be located below a bench seat. Semiautomatic transmission is standard. Three forms of suspension, leaf springs, airor rubber, are available, and the last type is the Metalastik toggle-link system developed in conjunction with BMMO and Potteries Motor Traction.
There are two wheelbases on the Fleetline model, 16ft 3in for 30ft long bodies and 18ft 6in for 33ft long bodies. The longer-wheelbase chassis can be used as a basis for single-deck bodywork when the body design can provide for the rear seat to be located above the engine as with the Roadliner.
A Gardner 6LX engine is commonly fitted but the 6LW as an option and a Cummins Vfi can also be specified. Semi-automatic transmission is standard and the rear axle has a dropped centre allowing a level gangway for the full length of the lower saloon.
