SOME DETAIL changes in the range of Albion passenger chassis were listed in the review included in the last p.s.v. number. Since then no important alterations have been made and production of three basic types of single-deck chassis continues.
The Viking VK41L is a front-engined chassis with a 16ft 1in wheelbase designed for a frontentrance body of up to 42-seat capacity. Overall length is 31k Gin and gross weight rating 9 tons.
The engine used in this model is the Leyland 0.370 while the gearbox is an Albion five-speed constant-mesh unit; a sixth overdrive ratio can be specified.
Additional front-entry space is provided in the next version of the Viking—the VK43AL—because this has a rear-mounted engine. Running units are generally similar to the VK41L but the engine is a Leyland 0.400 and the clutch has a diameter of 15in. Another difference is that the air-hydraulic brakes have a split system and while the gross weight rating is the same at 9 tons for the bus version it is increased to 9.5 tons for coach chassis. Wheelbase is 16ft 2in and the chassis is suitable for 32ft-long bodies of 40/45-seat capacity.
A special version of the rear-engined Viking is designated the VK45L. It has a greater-capacity engine cooling system and is designed for overseas markets where this is an important requirement.
The third basic p.s.v. chassis from Albion is a Clydesdale, primarily designed for overseas use on below-standard roads, The Leyland 0.400 engine is in the front and the braking is by a full air-pressure system. Single-deck bodies up to 32ftlong can be accommodated and the gross weight limit of this version of what is basically a goods model is 12 tons.
