Q IR DONALD STOKES this week revealed that Leyland Motor Corporation has received a £2.7m order from South Africa for 1,000 of its Super Comet Elands.
They embody a new combination of existing well-proved major units and have been specially designed for conditions in the Republic.
The first Elands will go to operators there early next year and will have a local content of about 35 per cent. Many will be 16-tongross rigids; others will be 1 lft-wheelbase models for equipping either as tippers or tractive units—South African hauliers are fast turning to artic operation.
Specification features of the Super Comet Elands include the use of a six-cylinder Leyland 0.400 diesel engine and a five-speed gearbox with splitter mechanism providing 10 forward speeds.
The Leyland ail-metal Vistavue cab has been particularly specified for the vehicles, for it has stood up well to South African road conditions. It will, however, have a low step forward of the front wheels to give easy entrance.
The new range will be assembled at the Durban plant of the Leyland Motor Corporation of South Africa, which produces heavy commercial vehicles with an increasing percentage of local content.
There are now more than 20,000 Leyland Group vehicles on South African roads and other Leyland expansion projects include a R4m (£2m) diesel engine plant already being built at Elandsfontein, near Johannesburg.
