BUS PASSENGERS throughout Scotland may soon have to pay more—if the Traffic Commissioners approve a fares increase application by Scottish Omnibuses (who control W. Alexander and Sons, Highland Onmibuses and the S.M.T. companies).

The hearing is expected to take place in Edinburgh next month. Highland's application will be heard in Inverness.

Increases being sought are: ld on most single fares up to 2s 9d; 2d on fares from 3s to 3s 9d; and 3d on fares over 4s. Return fares up to 5s would go up by 3d; those from 5s/10s, by 6d; 10s/15s, by 9d; 15s/19s 9d by Is; and from ,19s 9d to 22s by Is 3d.

Highland proposes an increase of ld on single fares on town services at Inverness, Wick, Thurso and Dingwall. On services outside towns, it suggests an increase of ld on single fare i from 5d to is; 2d on fares from Is ld to ls lid; 3d on fares of 2s to 2s lid, and 4d on fares from 3s to 4s 11d. An increase of 7+ per cent is proposed on single fares over 5s.

• An Institute of Traffic Administration plan to establish a centre at Reading, Berks., will be discussed at a meeting on October 3 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Kidmore Road, Caversham, Reading (7.30 p.m.).
