THE VERY WIDE RANGE of Leyland passenger chassis includes all types currently popular with operators. There are single-deck chassis with central underfloor and rear-underfloor engines and designs suitable for double-deck bodywork with front engines and rear engines. And as well as these there is a model based on the Comet goods chassis which is intended primarily for export.
Horizontal-underfloor single-deck chassis are the Leopard. Tiger Cub and Royal Tiger Worldmaster which have engines within the wheelbase and the Panther and Panther Cub in which the engines are at the extreme rear of the chassis. There are bus and coach versions of all except the Tiger Cub.
And there are also alternative wheelbases in most cases. The Leopard with a wheelbase of 16ft 2in is suitable for 30ft-long bodies and that with a wheelbase 18ft 6in caters for 36ft-long bodywork. A Leyland 0.600 engine is used in the Leopard in conjunction with either a four-speed synchromesh or four-speed epicyclic gearbox.
Tiger Cubs are suitable for 30ft bodies only (wheelbase 16ft 2in) and the underfloor engine in this case is the Leyland 0.400. The Royal Tiger Worldmaster is made in two wheelbases-18ft and 20ft—which are suitable for 34ftand 36ft-long bodies respectively. Optional engines in the Royal Tiger Worldmaster are the Leyland 0.600 and 0.680 and the transmission is through a fouror five-speed epicyclic gearbox.
Rear-engined single-deckers are becoming increasingly popular and the two Leyland offerings cater for alternative lengths. The Panther which has a wheelbase of 18ft 6in is for 36ft-long bodies while the Panther Cub with a wheelbase of 16ft 6in is designed for 33ft 6in-long bodywork, A Leyland 0.600 or 0.680 diesel can be specified for the Panther and the Panther Cub is equipped with an 0.400 power unit.
The most popular Leyland chassis as a basis for double-deck bodies is the Atlantean with rear mounted engine. There are two versions, one for 30ft-long bodies, the other for 33ft-long bodywork. Alternative engines in the Atlantean are the 0.600 and the 0.680 and the transmission is through a four-speed semi-automatic gearbox. The chassis can be supplied with a straight-through rear axle or one with a drop centre which allows a level gangway in the lower saloon as well as a reduction in overall height over the former design which necessitates a step in the gangway.
Front-engined chassis from Leyland are the Tiger single-decker and the Titan double-decker. There are similarities between these two models but while the Tiger has a wheelbase of 21ft 6in for 33ft-long bodies the Titan is available in wheel bases which make it suitable for 27ft-, 28ftand 30ft-long bodywork. Both these models have a Leyland 0.600 diesel and as well as a four-speed epicyclic transmission unit which is available in both chassis, the Titan can be supplied also with four-speed synchromesh gearbox.
The Comet-based p.s.v. has a wheelbase of 16ft 11 in to allow for 27ft 61n-long bodies.
Except for the Comet all the Leyland passenger chassis referred to can be supplied with the Leyland Pneumocyclic semi-automatic gearbox and those with horizontal diesel engines can be supplied with airor leaf-spring suspension.
In addition to manufacturing complete chassis Leyland provides engines and running units to Metropolitan-Cammell-Weymann Ltd. to be fitted in Olympic integral-construction single-deckers.
