NO CHANGES of any importance have been made in the Ford R Series of bus and coach chassis since last year when dual-line air-assisted-hydraulic braking was made standard and improvements were made in the gear change linkage and so on.
Two chassis are involved, the R192, with a wheelbase of 16ft, designed for 32ft-long 45-seat bus and coach bodies, and the R226 which is for 36ft long bodywork and has an 18ft 10in wheelbase.
Three alternative power units are listed for the R192: the Ford 330 Cu. in 115 b.h.p. diesel is standard and the 360 cu. in 128 b.h.p. diesel is an option. The third power unit that can be had on this model is the Ford 300 Cu, in. petrol which is available on special application only. There is also a choice of fouror five-speed gearboxes and singleor twospeed rear axles. The 8226 has a 360 Cu. in diesel and a five-speed gearbox as standard. In this case also there is a choice of singleor two-speed rear axles.
The R192 and R226 have engines at the front and one change on the latter chassis for 1967/1968 was the introduction of heavier-capacity front springs to accommodate heavier coach-body weights. Power-steering is standard on the R226 and an option on the R192.
As well as these full-size p.s.v. chassis Ford offers passenger-carrying versions of the popular Transit van. There is a 12-seat version on the 8ft lin wheelbase chassis and a 15-seat version on the 9ft 10in wheelbase model. Special-bodied versions of the Transit are offered by a number of the bodybuilders and typical of these is the Deansgate but available from Williams Motor Co. (Sales) Ltd., of Manchester. This conversion is based on the long wheelbase Transit, and seats 12 passengers as well as the driver and is constructed to p.s.v. standards. It costs £1,200.
