A Heavyduty Scammell Vehicle Eqpipped with a Special Type of Hoppel Body of All steel Con struction

THE basis of the interesting vehicle which is shown in an accompanying illustration is the well-known Seammell articulated six-wheeler. This machine is equipped with. 13.5-in. by 20-in. lowpressure tyres on the wheels of the driving and carrier axles and 9-in. by 20-in. tyres on the front wheels. Goodyear K-type rims are emPloyed.

The carrier, embodying the special hopper body, is frameless, in the ordinary sense of the word. The body is of all-steel construction and is composed chiefly of plates stiffened by angles and shallow channel members. The floor is of inverted V-section and is built in three divisions, the bulkheads which separate them serving as cross-gussets.• The height of the body from ground level is 8 ft. 6 ins., and the capacity of the body is 111 cubic yds.

The contents of the body can be rapidly discharged, there being two sets of three hinged drop doors at the sides. Any door can be released at will by turning one of a pair of longitudinal bars, on which there are stops corresponding with the position of the respective doors. A star wheel on the rear end of the rod and an index plate, which is marked "front," "middle and "rear," enable the doors to be controlled single-handed.

The first movement consists in locking the striking bar in position for the • door which it is desired to openThis is done by partial rotation of the bar, followed by sliding it forward by means of a fulcrum bar. The second movement causes the selected stop to trip a spring-held catch, which frees the door and allows it to drop to the limit.

The length of the motive unit is 11 it9 ins., and the overall length of the complete vehicle 20 ft. 7 ins. The carrier is connected to the prime-mover by the standard SCaroniell turntable and kingpin arrangement, the former being carried on the maker's well-known form of suspension, which provides for the total weight of the carrier and load being Malt with on independent springs, the sprung weight e,f the motive unit being on entirely separate springs.

This interesting vehicle has been delivered by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., 52-54, High Holborn, London, W.0.1, to the Mendip Transport Co., Leigh-onMendip, near Bath.
