Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

to be introduced

WE are advised by Atkinson Walker Wagons, Ltd., Kendal Street Works, Preston, that it hopes shortly to introduce two types of oil-engined lorry ; one is a rigid six-wheeler designed to carry 12 tons, whilst the other is a four-wheeler with a useful pay-load of 6 tons. The former will be priced at £1,450 and the latter at £1,250. In due course we bone to give a fell description of these vehicles. The following leading details are of interest.

The engine is a Blackstone 1111176, having six cylinders with a bore of 4a ins, and a stroke of 6 ins.; the com

pression ratio is 14 to 1 and the output is 55 b.h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m. The wellknown Blackstone spring injection system is, of course, employed. Oil is forced into troughs under the big-ends and thence is fed by splash.

The drive is taken through a multipledisc, dry cliiteh to a four-forward-speed gearbox, which is separately mounted and affords overall ratios ranging from 5.75 to 1 to 28.1 to 1. starting may be either by an electric motor or by an auxiliary petrol engine, used in conjunction with the starting handle. An enclosed propeller shaft takes the drive to a double-reduction-type axle with fully, floating shafts. The third axle is of the trailing type, whilst the bogie incorporates the Atkinson balanced compensating gear—a design which has been employed for many conversion sets by the company in question.

Pneumatic tyres of 40 ins. by 8 ins. are used on all the wheels. The wheelbase to the centre of the bogie is 16 ft. 6 ins., the bogie wheelbase is 4 ft., and the maximum overall width 7 ft. 6 ins.

The standard equipment includes a 24-volt electric set, a mechanical tyre pump, speedometer. and a spare wheel.
