Mainly the smaller operators are to be dealt with at next week's sittings of the Southern Scotland Commissioners, and, of course, they will meet a good deal of railway opposition. The Paisley and District Omnibus Co. will be heard at Paisley on Tuesday next, its several stage-carriage applications being unopposed. At Glasgow, on the -14th, Glasgow Corporation will object to several applications by W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd., Midland Bus Services, Ltd:, and others in respect of tours. Gazette No. 23 lists a number of licences granted to the Scottish General Transport Co., Ltd., and other concerns.

Majestic Saloon Coaches, Ebchester, Co. Durham, has now definitely withdrawn its application for an express service between London and Glasgow, which means to say that the NewcastleGlasgow extension of the old route has been abandoned. Incidentally, the company is still meeting railway opposition and the case is a particularly interesting one.

The absence of objectors' names against long lists of licence applications by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., United Automobile Services, Ltd., the Caledonian Omnibus Co., Ltd., etc., in Gazette No. 13 af the Northern Area serves as a reminder to the independent operator of the seriousness of his position vis-a-vis the railway interests. The licences will come up for consideration at the Carlisle sitting commencing on October 13th, when applications affecting the whole Carlisle bus system under the new scheme will be heard.

When we come to the list to be started upon on October 15th, we find practically every independent bus proprietor up against objections by the L.N.E. or L.M.S. railway companies, although, practically without exception, this list relates to stage-carriage services.

The gazette includes quite a number of licences granted, including two to Messrs. Simpson and Thompson' of Carlisle, permitting operation between

Botcherby and the Town Hall up to October 13th. This gazette announces special conditions which will be attached to licences in respect of operation in Windermere and Keswick urban districts, the boroughs of Kendal and "Whitehaven and Auckland rural district.

• Next week's Yorkshire Area sittings will be marked by contentious s:larttions over licences for excursion: ind tours, -as well as a number of northcountry express services.

A large number of fresh applications is listed in Gazette No. 22 of the NorthWestern Area. Blackpool Corporation stage-carriage applications are being considered at this week's Blackpool sit. ting, an application in respect of excursions and tours being opposed by the Blackpool and District Motor Coach Owners Association. Later this week a number of excursion applications by independent concerns is listed for hearing, and practically all of these are objected to by the railways and municipalities.

An interesting feature of some of the express-service applications by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., is the appearance of the Hope Congregational Church as an objector, and some operators are wondering whether this indicates that the Commissioners are likely to be experiencing more definite interest from the public generally in regard to their duties.

At this week's Shrewsbury sitting of the West Midland Commissioners the L.M.S. Railway Co. will object to two applications made by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., to continue existing excursions and tours operated with express carriages. The latter company is a prominent objector this week to a number of stagecarriage applications by local independent concerns. The G.W. and L.M.S. railway companies are opposing expressservice applications by the Merseyside Touring Co.. Ltd., and Ribble Motor Servi, ces. Ltd., for routes between Lancashire and Ilfracombe and the West Country. Gazette No. 26 of this area announces a number of licenees granted to non-railway bus operators.

Applications by Elliott Brothers (Bournemouth), Ltd., for backings by the East Midland Commissioners, which

• are to be heard at Nottingham on October 2nd, are at present faced with no opposition and the same applies to the Glasgow-London backing application of Messrs. Orange Brothers. Apart from this, the Nottingham sitting will be mainly occupied by independent operators who have applied for stage-carriage

and excursion licences, and there will not be a great deal of objedtion.

Mainly smaller operators are to be dealt with (It the Hertford sitting of the Eastern Commissioners, commenting on October 6th, At this sitting Venture Transport (Hendon), Ltd., and the Skylark Motor Coach Co., Ltd., will have to face the L.N.E.R. Co. and the L.G.O. Co,, Ltd., when applying for licences to continue their stage-carriage services between London and Luton and London and Hodclesdon respectively.

The number of applications which the Southern Commissioners will consider at the Swindon sitting commenc ing-, to-day has had to be redaeed. • Applications Nos. J7941,689, according to the list given in Gazette No. 26, are allotted, to to-day's sitting, the lists for to-morrow, Thursday and Friday being respectively J1,70742,062, J2,065J2,375 and J2,39142,555.

London-coastal express services and excursions by independent operators, as well as by the Southern National Omnibus Co.,.Ltd., and others are occupying most of the time of rthe South-Eastern Commissioners at the Lewes sitting which opened yesterday. Needless to say, the independent concerns are meeting much opposition, whilst most of the railway-associated companies are faced

with none. G. Ewer and Co., Ltd., London, is a prominent applicant at this sitting. Next week's work is of mainly the same nature.

Next • week's sitting of the London Commissioner also will be occupied by this class of application. Blue Belle Motors, Ltd., is being opposed by the Southern Railway in connection with its excursions and tours, whereas Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., meets with practically no objection. On October 8th the L.G.O. Co., Ltd., will oppose a number of express-service applications covering routes out of London to the Epsom, Goodwood and other racecourses.
