Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In the issue of this journal for the 13th May, 1909. we described and illustrated a system of electric carlighting which was then being handled by Messrs. C. A. Vandervell and Co., of Warple Way, Acton Vale, W. Sonic of our readers may remember that that system necessitated the inclusion of a magnetically-operated automatic cut-out device; regularity of output on the part of the dynamo was, in that earlier type, secured by the employment of two additional commutator brushes, whose function was variably to control the excitation of the shunt-wound machine. Vander'ell's have now placed on the market an installation in which an automatic cut-out has no place, and in which voltage regulation has been secured by the ingenious employment, of the varying magnetic effects that are seeured by means of a special setting of the ordinary brushes and by the provision of two sebsidiary poles. Both these characteristics have been secured by method,: whieh have done much to simplify the system, and, from that point of view alone, a careful inquiry into the merits of the new Vandervell elpiipment should repay those whose interests lie with sech machines as motoreabs. mail-vans, delivery vans,

etc.. We illustrate. by means of a diagram. the principle nf Vander-ell's new method. St and Ni are the enwound poles, whilst N and S are the subsidiary wound poles. Our other illustration is that of the armature and

its spindle; this shows the simple form of free-wheel clutch, by which means it is impossible, when the dynamo is being driven at too low a speed to supply current to the battery, for the former, as a motor, to attempt to drive the engine. Current from the battery may thus actually drive the armature, but it can do so against no resistance because of the interposition of the free wheel, and therefore the waste output from the battery never exceeds 1,1 amperes, even if the engine be stopped before the driver has taken the precaution to disconnect the battery circuit.
