• Next autumn's commercial truck show at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham has been axed because of lack of interest from major truck manufacturers.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which usually organises the Birmingham event alternate years, has decided it cannot make a booking at the NEC without the commitment of major companies. This has not been forthcoming: Volvo, Foden, Scania and Iveco Ford are certain not to exhibit; Renault is "very unlikely" to attend as is MAN. ERF, Seddon Atkinson and Leyland Daf are undecided.
Rod England, chairman of SMMT's CV section, says the show committee met last week and decided not to go ahead with the once-prestigious show. Its decision will be ratified by the general-purpose committee on 9 November.
England, who is ERF's marketing director, says he is "very disappointed" by the lack of support from major manufacturers.
Many manufacturers said the cost of floorspace at the NEC was the biggest factor in their lack of interest.
