• The two-pedal version of Eaton's Semi Automated Mechanical Transmission (SAMT), unveiled at the Hanover Show in May, could be available sooner than expected. But the transmission manufacturer says it will wait until the two-pedal SAMT is adopted and offered by truck manufacturers, before it officially launches it.
When Eaton unveiled the twopedal SAMT, based on its popular 12-speed constant-mesh Twin Splitter box, it declared that it would be launching it "within the next two years". However with the arrival of Volvo's two-pedal Geartronic system, (CM 22-28 October), it seems set to accelerate its timetable.
Customers likely to be SAMT users include Iveco, ERF and Seddon Atkinson. Like Volvo's Geartronic, the two-pedal SAMT has a conventional clutch but is automatically controlled via a micro-processor.
