• Councillors in Surrey are poised to slap fresh controls on lorries travelling in built-up areas, following an investigation by transport officials into the volume of heavy goods traffic using 21 major urban routes in the county.
The investigation was prompted by complaints from local residents, and the checks could lead to complete bans and weight or width restrictions. It is unlikely, however, that controls will be put on all roads. Ernest Wright, chairman of Surrey's highways and transport committee, says lorries can be "a real problem to local communities, but with the county having about double the national average traffic flows, it makes controlling them all the more difficult".
The committee has already recommended an experimental 18-month ban on lorries over 16.5 tonnes on part of Chobharn High Street — it says this is a conservation area which suffers from the many lorries passing through it.
