blanket system of prosecutions for all truck overloading offences. In its reply to the recent National Audit Office report (CM 177 October), Department of Transport: Regulation of Heavy Lorries, the AMA says there should be a positive response.
The AMA claims that the NAO report is an "independent vindication of a longstanding local authorities cam paign. The DTp needs to tighten up enforcement of rules against overloading and to improve co-operation between its own officers and local authority agencies."
The association adds that it wants "the power to stop vehicles and check them, and we want every overloaded lorry to be prosecuted."
The AMA also wants the DTp to consider a number of amendments to the goods vehicle operator licensing system.
