Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

the new Boughton B Type water tender (CM 1 October-7 October) you refer to the 5.7-litre Volvo TD71A 27'7hp diesel engine as having been "supplied by Volvo Penta, the Swedish company's marine engine division."

Though conjuring up amusing visions of amphibious water tenders your description of the source of the engines for Boughton could be misleading.

In fact, Volvo Penta engines are developed by a company within the Volvo group called AB Volvo Penta. This industrial company specialises in advanced technology and extensive product adaptation to design, develop and manufacture diesel and petrol engines for both industrial and marine applications.

AB Volvo Penta manufactures at five plants in Sweden as well as plants in the USA and Brazil, providing engines that are developed from the ground up for specific applications. These include industrial engines for manufacturers of generator sets, pump sets, materials handling vehicles, construction machines as well as special applications, such as Boughton's, in which a Volvo Truck Corporation chassis is not employed.

AB Volvo Penta has also developed a range of marine petrol and diesel engines as well as the highly successful Aquamatic range of inboard/ outboard propulsion systems.

What is misleading for your readers is the impression that Volvo Penta industrial engines are modified marine engines and vice versa. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Thank you for the opportunity of setting the story straight. Andrew Shanks AB Volvo Penta
