• Volvo has launched a scheme to replace worn engines on Leyland buses with its own engines — the first time the Swedish firm has offered re-powering units for used vehicles built by a competitor.
The new project involves fitting kits based on Volvo's THD 100 10-litre turbocharged engine in place of Leyland 680 and TL11 (183 kW) engines in Leopards and Tigers. It follows the planned closure of Leyland's engine works.
Fitting the Volvo repowering kit will take about 50 hours. The kit comes with a 12-month unlimited distance warranty and free six-weekly services. Work is done by Gatwick Engineering in the South, Nottingham City Transport in the Midlands and Western Scottish in Scotland. The kits cost £8,000 plus VAT.
