'NDA CHALKER has been rewarded for her energy and enthusiasm while serving ider two Transport Secretaries. The change in her title is, however, cosmetic, though the increase in salary is practical.

As Minister of State for Transport she will not have a voice in the Cabinet Room. But her new role, it appears that she will become the power behind the transport rone. Her experience at Marsham Street should prove invaluable to Nicholas Ridley.

We do not yet know who the "transport shadow minister" will be. Whoever it is will od a knowledgeable and energetic Minister across the floor of the House.

During the new Parliamentary session, transport is unlikely to feature in any major abates, with the possible exceptions of the privatisation of London Transport; and re futures of the Passenger Transport Executives and perhaps the Severn Bridge.

Nevertheless, the industry should use any period of calm to keep putting its case efore the Government. Mrs Chalker is already well aware of how road transport feels I a number of matters which are lying dormant the moment but which could very easily come to e ere long.

Her elevation in status should not be ignored.
