A RAIL freight terminal has been opened in Stranraer and it was built and equipped at a cost of more than £250,000 by a Middlesbrough based haulage firm.
Stockton Haulage Ltd received a Government grant for the scheme because, in line with official policy, it will transfer freight from road to rail.
Traffic is carried to and from the railhead by British Rail's daily freight service to the port. It is then transferred from the rail wagon to one of Stockton's fleet of trailers at the terminal.
Goods destined for Ireland via the Stranraer/Larne ferry route are then shuttled to the quayside. Only the loaded trailer goes on board a ro-ro ferry and it is collected at Larne and delivered to its destination.
