THE main features of a new range of tandem-axle semi-trailers, announced today (Friday) by Scammell Lorries Ltd., are the use of a rolled I-section beam in the construction of the main-frames and that a Rubery Owen bogie is offered IIS a standard option on all models. It is believed to be the first time that Scammell has offered R.0 running gear on its trailer equipment.

Designed to operate at g.t.w. of up to 30 tons the new semi-trailers are available in lengths of from 24 ft_ to 30 ft in increments of 1 ft., those models over. 30 ft. in total length being suitable for operating at the 30 ton g.t.w. Frame design is conventional, with the cross-bearers pierced through the main-frames and all joints electrically welded. One tubular cross-member is fitted centrally between the main members to increase the torsional stability of the units.

When fitted with either the Scammell air-suspension or the stacked-rubber suspension, the frame is further stiffened by the two tubular members that form the main sections of these two running gears. Strongly webbed to the. main frame and electrically welded, they assist in preventing much of the wracking that prematurely destroys bodywork, and also form the mounting points for the trailing-arm units of the suspensions.

The dimensions of the main frames are 16 in. deep by 5-5 in. wide and the cross-bearers are 4 in by 2-5 in. Pressedsteel side-raves are welded to the cross-bearers, positioned to provide a 1 in. or 2-5 in. rave height. Alternatively an upturned or downturned rolled-angle can provide either a flush floor or a 1 in. rave.

Floorboards are of 1 in. nominal thickness hardwood laid longitudinally, and a steel and timber headboard 2-5 ft., 3-5 ft., or 4-5 ft. high is optional. There are two optional widths for units having fiat platforms. These can be either 7 ft. 11-5 in. or 8 ft. 2 in. wide. When fitted with sided bodies the clear width is 7 ft. 11.5 in. only. Wheelbases of the units vary from 17 ft. Sin, on the 24 ft-long version to 23 ft. 6 in. on the 34 ft.-long version. These figures. are the " king-pin to centre of bogie" measurement Landing gear is by Adrolic and is of the single-speed type ill, fitted with fixed feet. Two-speed landing-gear with wheels is an option. Braking in all cases is by Rubery Owen S-cam units 15.5 in. by 7 in. operated by direct airpressure and fitted with triple-diaphragm chambers coupled to comply with the three-line system. A wheel-operated parking brake is fitted.

A standard 2 in.-diameter king-pin is fitted, positioned to provide a 2 ft. front overhang. Tyre equipment can be 9.00, 10-00 or 11.00 by 20, and super singles or 1200. by 20 tyres can be fitted when the Rubery Owen bogie is used.

Electrical equipment includes stop/tail lights, front corner lights and side markers where required. Flashing indicator lights and reflectors are also standard.

A steel protection plate is fitted to the underside of the floor above the wheels and the trailers are fitted with mud flaps. The finish is in brown chromate primer.

Claimed weights with the Scammell suspensions range from 3 tons 15 cwt. for the 24 ft.-Iong version to 4 tons 10..5 cwt. for the 34 ft.-long version. When the Rubery Owen suspension is fitted this is reduced by approximately 300 lb. Both of these weights are with flat platform bodies. Other alternatives to the standard specification are 16.5 in. by 7 in, brakes, conventional steel mudguards with or without mudflaps, a hub odometer, an underrun bumper, double floors, spare wheel and carrier and electrical-circuitbreaker.
