APPLYING for the renewal of a B licence in respect of one vehicle, counsel for the applicant company, Mr. J. Edward Jones, told the North Western LA in Liverpool on Monday that, on resuming after illness, the director found that tyres and other spares to the value of 0,000 could not be accounted for. He said that he wanted to measure his words very carefully, but the loss was catastrophic. The renewal was granted for a period of one year.
The applicants were Southern (Removals) Ltd., of Wallasey. In evidence Mr. Thomas Southern, director,. handed in schedules of earnings, including those of two vehicles on A licence, and details of journeys made. His brother-in-law had helped him in the business for three years. Following his illness. Mr. Southern said that he found maintenance had been neglected and there had been " coercion " with the drivers. He confirmed the 0,000 worth of spares to be accounted for and had given the Ministry vehicle examiner the background when the question of maintenance arose.
At this stage, Mr. F. Clayton, for British Railways, after clarifying the earnings, indicated that in view of the condition of the B licence—furniture and effects and general goods, 50 miles—and the evidence given, he would not pursue the objection.
The vehicle examiner, Mr. A. L. White, said that in March he found no maintenance system had existed for a considerable time and two vehicles had been issued with an immediate prohibition order and one with a delayed order. More recently a delayed order had been issued for one vehicle.
Mr. Jones asked the LA to renew the licence for one year and so give his clients time to put matters right. The LA granted this subject to a report from Mr. White on the current position being satisfactory. Mr. Southern was warned of the consequences of any . further transgression.
