DOUBLE-DECKERS ON SINGLE. DECK CHASSIS?

HE 14.1.0.W.1e. recently proposed the conversion, of Leyland T.S.7 singledeckers into T.D.4 • double-deckers, the work to be carried out by operators

at their own expense. The scheme covers some 250 vehicles. This was considered by the New Vehicles Subcommittee of the Associations concerned, and its report submitted to the Ministry.

This is briefly to the effect that there

is some doubt as to the. demand for such Conversions, having regard to the

reported shortage of single-deekers of orthodox design. The restriction to one type of vehicle of one make must increase the difficulty of examining the demand for such conversions. Often there would be operational difficulties, such as low bridges, The T.S.7 vehicles are relatively modern, and existing bodies and parts replaced would become scrap. The work would be at the marked expense of the maintenance of the. rest of a fleet. The new double-deckers would be built by bodybuilders, who are not • allowed to carry out major repairs to existing vehicles. They would be much better employed in the latter work.

The total capacity, including -standees, would be increased by only four to six passengers, at an approximate cost of £1,200 per vehicle.

Apart from such considerations, there would be no purely technical difficulties, as the vehicles produced would, in effect, be standard doubledeckers.

ROYAL VISIT TO " TOP-DOG " WORKS

A SHORT time ago Hubert -H. P. Trist and Co. and the English Asbestos Co., Ltd., were honoured by

a visit from H.M. Queen Mary. Per haps this was partly in appreciation of the fact that the first-named company was instrumental, in 1922, in introduc ing to Brislington and the West of England a new industry—the manufac ture from asbestos of brake facings, clutch linings and • other important products. Later, the " Top-Dog" works were built to cope with the growth of this business. Eighteen years after, in 1940, the company introduced still another industry—the spinning of yarn from asbestos—when the send and associate-company was formed, and another works constructed.

The Queen Mother was met by Mr. B. E. Draper, the` proprietor of Hubert H. P. Trist and Co.; his son, Lance Corporal R. B. Draper, Royal Corps of Signals, chairman of. English Asbestos

Co., Ltd.; and Mr. A. J. Cogan, a

director of the latter concern. In addition to Her Majesty's Lady-in-Waiting and her Equerry, the party included Mr. H.. C. M. Austin, C.B.E., Regional Controller, nfinistry of Supply.

During her tour' of the works Queen Mary saw asbestos, received fforn Canada and Rhodesia, in every stage of manufacture up to the finished products. Many of the staff, internal and outside, were presented. Her Majesty took tea with Mr. Draper and the other directors„and upon leaving accepted a bouquet of roses from the employees.

A particularly gracious action by Her Majesty was the autographing for each of the' manyemployees serving in the Forces of prints of a photograph of Her Majesty with the staff and workpeople, taken earlier during the visit.

TRANSPORT CONTROL MAY CONTINUE AFTER THE WAR

AFEW days ago Sir William Chamberlain, Regional Transport Commissioner for the North-west., complimented leaders of passenger transport at Bolton on the excellent war service they are giving in spite of difficulties. If there be.any complaint it was probably his fault and not that of the managers. At present he had to be a dictator, but in peace-time Commissioners did not interfere unduly and he would be glad to get to the more democratic methods of those days. He believed control of transport would have to continue for a few years after the war.
