Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Six-cylinder Dennis Model for 20-seater Coach and Bus Bodies Fully Lubricated Overheadvalve Gear and a Novel Oil Filler IN addition to the well-known range of passenger 'vehicles emanating from the Dennis factory, there is an interesting new model known as the Dart. This is a chassis intended for 20-seater bodies and has a six-cylindered overhead-valve engine'of the push-rod type. The specification is representative of the most modern practice.

The compact and cleanly designed engine is inclined to give a straight transmission line, and the frame is a typical example of refined passengerchassis construction, bavins.' a depth of 61 ins. and 2-in. flanges. Semi-elliptic springs are used both front and rear ; in the latter case they are underslung. 'Worm-and-wheel steering, ball thrusts for the stub axles, 33-in. by 5-in. single

and twin tyres, and a 15-gallon tank on the off side of the frame form items of the specification.

The leading dimensions are : Overall length, 20 ft 61 ; width, 6 ft. 3 ins. ; dash to end of frame, 16 ft. 31 ins.; height of frame, 1 ft. 9i ins.; width ,of frame, 2 ft. 8 ins.; wheelbase, 13 ft. 21 ins.; front track, 5 ft. 2 ins. ; rear track, 5 ft. 0} in.; minimum ground clearance, 61 ins.; turning circle, 50 ft.

Pour-point suspension is used for the engine-gearbox unit ; at the front two rubber blocks are employed, whilst at the rear a bridge plate is carried upon robber-lined trunnions. On the off side of the engine are three detachable plates which' cover the tappet gear and camshaft, which normally work in an oil bath. The A.C. fuel pump is driven from the camshaft on this side. The cylinder block and crankcase are cast in one, but the head is detachable; it carries the valves with their operating mechanism. On the near side is the Auto-Klean oil filter, which has its plates automatically cleaned every time the clutch is disengaged.

On the near side are the oil filler and pump, behind which are the dynamo and magneto, a small mirror being provided for reflecting the condition of the makeand-break ; below the magneto is the starter. A six-port manifold carries a Soles carburetter. At the front end is a triplex-roller-chain distribution drive with automatic tensioner.

This engine develops 30 b.h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m. and over 60 b.h.p. at the peak. The valves are offset from the centre line to promote turbulence and to prevent a valve falling into a cylinder in the event of a fracture. Pressure lubrication is used throughout the engine, also for the overhead-valve mechanism, even the push-rod cups being so supplied. The cylinder liners are machined all over and make direct contact with the water in the cooling jackets. Aluminium, or cast-iron pistons are used.

At the rear end of the four-speed gearbox is a housing for the ball on the front end of the torque tube, which is constructed in two parts and has a roller bearing in the •centre of the shaft. Oval-section stays from the centre of the tube run to the ends of the axle casing. The clutch is of singleplate construction and is carried in a bell housing.

An underslung worm is used for the final drive and the axle casing is of the built-up type, with underslung springs and outrigger bearings for the brake camshafts above the spring-mounting bolts. Pedal operation causes the fourwheel brakes to be applied through the medium of a Dewandye servomotor. Turnbuckle adjustments are provided for the brakes and the drums in, the rear wheels Can be removed without taking off the hubs.
