The chairman and members of the Kelvin Medal Award Committee announce that the presentation of the medal, which has this year been awarded to M. Andre Blonde', of France, will be made by Sir Donald Macalister, of Tarbert, Bt., K.C.B., principal and vice-chancellor of Glasgow University, in the Great Hall of the Institution of Civil Engineers on November 5th, at 5 p.m. The French Ambassador will receive the medal on behalf of M. Blondel. Sir Brodie If. Henderson, K.C.M.G., C.D., president of the Institution and chairman of the award committee, will occupy the chair.

Another Railway Line to be Closed? The London and North Eastern Railway Co. is considering closing the branch line between Blyth and Tyneside, because of the adequate service of motorbuses in the district. The corn

pany itself is working road services in the area through the medium of the United Automobile Services, Ltd., and, in addition, numerous bus undertakings are serving the neighbourhood so effectively that, in the past few years, there has been a steady and increasing falling off in the number of rail passengers.

Instructions for a Washing Plant.

A useful instruction card for the HP Hydroforce Triplex vehicle-washing plant (two and four-gun models) has just been issued by Harvey Frost and Co., Ltd., 148-150, Great Portland Street, London, W.1. It explains the method of servicing the unloading valve, the adjusting of packing and of the gun, besides giving lubrication and other important information, it also embodies a 'sectional drawing of the valve mechanism of the pump.

Tramways-replacement Schemes in South Wales.

It is probable that in the near future a great part of the Newport (Mon.) Council's tramway service will be abolished and buses employed on these routes. The proposal is that the tram service between the Newport boundary and the town centre, along the Chepstow road, shall be replaced by buses,

• as Newport Council is to relay and widen this road to form a continuation of the Monmouth County Council's new road from Chepstow to the Newport boundary. A committee has in hand the preparation of a report on the proposed replacement and if the scheme materializes, a considerable number of buses will be required.

Westinghouse Servo Braking.

The Westinghouse vacuum servo braking system is dealt with very comprehensively in a catalogue which has just been issued by the Westinghouse Brake and Saxby Signal Co., Ltd., 82, York Road, London, N.1. The descriptive matter is quite lucidly written, and a number of illustrations helps in a ready appreciation of the method of working.

Good Service from a Kathanode Battery.

To demonstrate the manner in which the plates in Kathanode bus-lighting batteries retain their active material, a battery, which had been in use for nearly two years on a corporation bus, was recently opened up for examination. The D.P. Battery Co., Ltd., of Bake

well, tells us that it was then found that the positive plates were in very good condition, the active material being intact and firm ; the negative plates -were also in sound condition, whilst the separators showed no signs of breaking down. There was practically no deposit and, after inspection, the battery was reassembled fog further service.

Workmen's Compensation for Busservice Irregularities.

The question of the legal liability of bus proprietors operating workmen's services to compensate passengers for loss of employment sustained by failure or irregularity in the running of hues, has been discussed by Bedwellty Urban District Council. A conference is being arranged which will be attended by local bus proprietors, .and this question, as well as that of overcrowding will be thoroughly discussed.

Penrith's Increasing Traffic.

The highways committee of Penrith Urban District Council reports that the result of the census of traffic in Brunswick Road, taken during seven days in August, shows the number of vehicles to be 11,202, as against 9,336 in a similar period in 1926. Glasgow Bus Prosecutions.

The chief constable of Glasgow has submitted a report in connection with prosecutions of owners, drivers and conductors of stage carriages, showing that 55 cases had been dealt with in the central police court during the month of September. Fines amounting to £107 were imposed in connection therewith, and, in addition, 37 cases of prosecutions against drivers of buses for exceeding the speed limit were reported to the Sheriff's Procurator-fiscal.

Licence Decisions at Hull.

The London and North Eastern Railway Co. has placed before the watch committee of Hull Corporation a proposal to establish a bus service to Bridlington and Scarborough. Consideration of the scheme has been adjourned. In the meantime the watch committee has refused licence applications by Binnington's Motors' Ltd., regarding a new service between Hull and Hessle and an increased service between Hull and Willerby, and by East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., in respect of a new service between Hull and Cottingham.

The Ministry Sanctions New Bradford ServiceS.

In connection with the application of Bradford Corporation for permission to establish trolley-bus services on various routes outside the corporation boundaries, the Ministry of Transport has sanctioned such services in the urban districts of Clayton, Shelf, Queensbury, Drighlington, Hunsworth Shipley and Bingley, but refused permission in respect of routes in the borough of Pudsey and the urban districts of Calverley, Farsley, Hipperholme, Birkenshaw and Baildon on the grounds of unsuitability.
