Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Carrimore-Lynx Articulated 20-tonner has a Six-cylindered Overhead-valve Englne and a Special Trailing Bogie

'WE have frequently dealt with the many types of trailer manufactured by Cammore . Six Wheelers, Ltd., Great North Road, London, N.121 and a range of the latest models will be exhibited at Olympia. The centre of attraction, however, upon this company's stand will be an entirely new articulated eight-wheeler intended for the transport of loads of 17-20 tons. Visitors will he surprised to see this com pany marketing a complete vehicle _ with power unit.

In general layout the design follows that of other vehicles of this kind, special features being the overhead-Camshaft engine of 4-in. bore and 51-in. stroke, which develops 107 b.h.p. at 1,600 r.p.m., and the specially arranged bogie having four wheels in line, which supports the rear end of the trailing unit.

Dealing first with the engine, this forms a unit with the single-plate clutch and four-speed gearbox, and is suspended at three points in the frame. The monobloc cylinder casting is held by long bolts to the webbed aluminium crankcase, the 2i-in. crankshaft beingcarried in five main bearings. Either magneto or coil ignition is available, and provision is made for dual ignition if required. Needless to say, there is pressure lubrication to all bearings, a filtering system being incorporated.

The fan is positively driven through the medium ,of a damper clutch, tfte centrifugal water impeller also having positive drive. An important point is that the e,nelosed aluminium radiator is isolated from chassis-frame distortion.

Transmission is of the enclosed kind with a massive spherical thrust member and Spicer mechanical joints, the driving axle being of the fully floating type with a doublereduction effected by spiral-bevel and double-helical gears, the overall axle ratio being 9,43 to 1.

The tractor frame itself is of channel section, 9 ins. deep, and the webs are 3 inS, wide, the carrier frame being built up of steel pressings and having side members with a maximum section of no less than 13 ins. by 4 ins, by in. The loading level is 4 ft. 71 The upper half of the turntable is a steel casting, the lower half consisting of steel pressings of deep section which appear amply strong for the work. The wheel-plate has a diameter of 3 ft. 2 ins. The turntable is supported on trani'verse pivot pins which are carried in steel bracket castings, and the securing bolts are relieved of the shearing stress of the load carried. The diameter of the king-pin is 41 ins. This brings us to the design of the trailing bogie. The four wheels are mounted on two short nickelsteel axles, 31 ins, in diameter, these being carried in steel trunnion castings which are arranged so that they pivot about transverse and longitudinal axes. The longitudinal axis takes the form of a heavy Ytype forging and, being pivoted at the front end to a 4-in, transverse steel tube, each of these Y-type forgings forms a cantilever. The transverse tube extends across the bogie, forming a rigid tie for the two forward spring brackets.

Mounted above each short axle is a semi-elliptic spring shackled at each end and anchored at the centre to the radius arm by a trunnion which is 2 ins, in diameter and 71 ins, long. The arrangement relieves the road springs of torque reaction, so that they are subject only to vertical loads.

The braking has been specially arranged to cope with the heavy load. It is Dewandre-assisted -and acts upon all eight wheels. The pedal operates through two servo motors on the tractor and two vacuum cylinders on the carrier attachment, acting upon all the road wheels, whilst the hand brake controls separate shoes only on the driving wheels ; an auxiliary handbrake operates on the four trailing wheels.

The wheels are shod with solidrubber tyres, the tractor having tyres of 8-in. section with twins on the driving wheels, and each trailer wheel has twin tyres of 130-mm. section.. The road wheels are steel castings of the hollow-spoke pattern. In conclusion, we would mention that particularly easy steering of the Manes type is provided.
