C&H (HAULIERS) has spent more than £4m on new trucks and trailers as it continues to modernise its fleet. The Essex firm, which transports 2.3 million tonnes of forestry products annually, has spent £3m on 37 Mercedes-Benz 6x2 Actros Gigaspace Euro-5 tractor units and £1m on 34 new SDC trailers.
MD Steve Mercer brought forward next year’s tractor purchases, which he called part of his Euro-6 avoidance plan. “I have been told that Euro-6 will be [up to] £10,000 more expensive; there will be a weight penalty, with fuel efficiency neutral at best,” he said.
Mercer has standardised the trailer fleet, and raised utilisation levels, by replacing 60 trailers with different specs and heights with 34 new products from SDC Trailers designed to operate domestically and on the Continent.
