ONLY 38% of LGV drivers know the correct minimum legal tread depth for their truck’s tyres.
A survey carried out by Goodyear and the Freight Transport Association’s Vehicle Inspection Service found that although 92% of drivers check their tyres before each journey, most were unable to identify the 1mm legal tread depth. Over two thirds of those questioned were unfamiliar with the new EU tyre labelling directive and what it meant. Only 41% of respondents identified five different ways in which tyres can affect fuel consumption.
Adam Stanton, Goodyear product marketing manager for commercial tyres in the UK, said: “While it is encouraging that in most cases daily checks are being carried out and drivers are aware of their legal responsibilities, it is concerning that the detail that lies behind these areas in terms of legal tread depth and factors affecting fuel consumption still aren’t understood.” The survey of 90 drivers was carried out over three tyre inspection events at services in Stafford North, Strensham North and Warwick South.
