Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Who says that nobody wants ex-fleet tractors? There's a particularly heathy demand for 1996 to 1998 vintage Daf 85 360s and 400s, according to independent trader Robert Reynolds.

"A haulier can buy we for £8,000 to £12,500, and that means he can get rid of his old J and K registered ERFs and Leylands without having to find £15,000 to £20,000 to replace them," Reynolds says. "What's more, he'll get better fuel economy.

'The only downside is that he will have to throw away his old trucks, or keep them and break them for spares. because nobody else will want them."

The biggest problem independent dealers face at present is a shortage of desirable late-registered used vehicles, says Reynolds.

'There's a lack of 44 tonne 6x2 tractors and powerful 4x2 tractors, and good-quality fridge and curtainsider trailers are thin on the ground too," he reports. "Quality second-hand tipper trailers are virtually nonexistent.

"It may be the case that operators are hanging on to trucks and trailers for longer than they would normally because they want to see what's going to happen with the economy before they replace them."

So far as rigids are concerned, the box van market is "a little bit slow," Reynolds reports. "Mercedes-Benz 1820s have gone up in value slightly, but that may be because a lot of them have been exported recently."
